5 surprising ways an advisor can help you

You may think an advisor is someone who helps you save for retirement - that is true. But it might surprise you to know that your advisor can do much more, and some of it is not so obvious.

I’m Derek Cooper, Senior Investment Advisor with TD Wealth Private Investment Advice here in Kingston.

Most people think of an advisor as someone who buys and sells assets - and although that is true, it is only one aspect of the services we provide. Let's have a look at five others:

Number 5 - death and disability

These are really tough topics and ones nobody wants to talk about. However, having a plan in place to protect you against these events is critical, especially if you have dependents.

So what might surprise you is that your advisor is able to help you think through these things, whether it be an estate plan, insurance, or a little additional savings. Now, creating the strategy is just the first step-- people often procrastinate in implementing these recommendations. We help with gentle encouragement to book an appointment with your lawyer to draft the will and powers of attorney.

Number 4 - see the future

I'm not talking about being a clairvoyant - but just someone who can see the consequences of your financial actions.

A strategy may make sense on the surface. However, there may be some additional considerations to factor in. So what might surprise you is that advsiors have their fingers on the pulse of all the rules and regulations. And we're able to apply these to your plan to determine if there's any unintended consequences.

Number 3 - helping you behave

Advisors can see common behaviors you have that may be self-sabotaging your own finances.

Money is emotional - and people often want to react to their emotions. Seeing how a tough day in the markets has impacted your savings or your retirement nest egg can make you feel compelled to take action, such as selling off your investments. What might surprise you is that your advisor can help you identify your investing blindspots, your biases, and things that may cause you to sabotage your plan.

We help you stay anchored to the long-term plan and reframe your thinking so that you're staying on track.

Number 2 - helping with marital bliss

We know spouses can fight about money.

As advsiors, we get everybody on the same page. So what might surprise you is that your advisor can facilitate a discussion that really surfaces what's important to everybody-- your own unique goals, priorities, and values. And from there, we can help you come up with some common goals and objectives that you're working towards as a couple.

Number 1 - money is finite

Sounds obvious - and it is. But advisors aren't just here to preach about savings. We actually help you understand the trade-offs in what you want to do. We help you surface what's truly important to you, as well as potentially where you're willing to compromise and give a little. The goal is to achieve what is important to you with something that is finite.
